Step 1: Take an Education Course
Complete a Measurement, Mitigation (mitigation certification requires completion on of Measurement Course first), or Combined Measurement and Mitigation Course.
A hands-on field session coursework is included in courses and additional shadow day hands-on work can be arrange for an additional fee. Kansas requires in-person field sessions which require a separate fee.
Step 2: Pass a National Measurement or Mitigation Exam (or Both)

Step 3: Apply for Certification
Complete the appropriate Certification Application and return to your State (where required: list of state contacts, list of states that accept KSU training) or/and NRPP or NRSB.
You've Passed the Exam, Now What?
To be certified as a radon service provider, you need to complete an application to your state if required or/and a recognized radon proficiency program: NRPP: www.nrpp.info and/or NRSB: www.nrsb.org. You may choose to join either program. For further information, please check the program websites. KSU is an approved training provider for both NRPP and NRSB. Most of our graduates choose to certify with NRPP.

Residential Radon Measurement Professional (Standard Services)
16 hours coursework. The NRPP Radon Measurement Professional Certification with Standard Services is for those who perform radon testing utilizing a standard/passive device. A Radon Measurement Professional is responsible for the implementation, execution, and documentation of all required QA/QC procedures and may provide general supervision and QA/QC oversight for Radon Measurement Field Technicians within the same company.

Residential Radon Measurement Professional (Analytical Services)
16 hours coursework. The NRPP Radon Measurement Professional Certification with Analytical Services is for those who perform radon testing utilizing an analytical device such as a continuous radon monitor or electret system. A Radon Measurement Professional is responsible for the implementation, execution, and documentation of all required QA/QC procedures and may provide general supervision for Radon Measurement Field Technicians within the same company.

Residential Radon Mitigation Specialist
24 hours coursework. The NRPP Radon Mitigation Specialist Certification is for those who evaluate radon measurements and design and install radon remediation systems. A Radon Mitigation Specialist is responsible for the implementation, execution, and documentation of all required Quality Management and Worker Safety procedures and may provide general supervision Radon Mitigation Installers within the same company.

Residential Radon Measurement Field Technician
12 hours coursework (not applicable in some states). The NRPP Radon Measurement Field Technician Certification is designed for staff members who deploy and retrieve approved measurement devices and insure building conditions for residential radon testing and assessment. A Certified RMFT must work under the general supervision and QA/QC oversight of a Certified Measurement Professional within the same company.

Residential Radon Mitigation Installer
20 hours coursework (not applicable in some states). The NRPP Radon Mitigation Installer (RMI) certification is designed for staff members who install soil depressurization systems in residences and implement measures to protect themselves, co-workers, and occupants from hazards related to the mitigation process. A Certified RMI must work under the general supervision of a Certified Radon Mitigation Specialist within the same company.

Radon Measurement Specialist
16 hours of coursework. Certification by the National Radon Safety Board as a Radon Measurement Specialist requires demonstration of knowledge which goes significantly beyond that required of a technician. In addition to basic training in the rudiments of radon measurements, the certified RMS must demonstrate a basic knowledge of radiation physics, an understanding of risk assessment, the epidemiological evidence of radon health risks, and the differences between various devices and techniques for measuring radon and radon decay products. The NRSB certified Radon Measurement Specialist must also understand the importance of radiation safety and be capable of designing and implementing a quality assurance program.

Radon Mitigation Specialist
24 hours of coursework. The NRSB requirements for certification as a Radon Mitigation Specialist (RRS) are essentially the same as those established by the Environmental Protection Agency Radon Proficiency Program for radon mitigators. To be certified a candidate must have a working knowledge of radon measurement techniques and health risks, and must demonstrate a broad knowledge in all aspects of residential radon mitigation.

Radon Measurement Technician
8 hours of coursework (not applicable in some states). Radon Measurement Technicians are people who have been trained and certified in the fundamentals of radon testing. This requires a basic understanding of radon and the health risks associated with it, as well as a thorough knowledge of measurement techniques and testing protocols.
